GETTING USED TO YOUR NEW GLASSES

Once you start wearing your new glasses, it is not unusual to feel overwhelmed by the clarity and crispness of your vision. This may bring some discomfort as you might feel off-balance, but the sensation usually passes after one to two weeks.

MOVE YOUR EYES, NOT YOUR HEAD

At first, you may experience dizziness due to moving your eyes instead of your head. It is important to make a conscious effort during this adjustment period in order to get used to the eye movement and do it naturally.

WEAR THEM EVERY DAY

After receiving your new glasses, your eyes will need time to adjust. Make it a goal to wear them everyday, for about one to two weeks, in order to break them in properly.

STILL UNCOMFORTABLE?

If you still experience discomfort after a couple of weeks, contact your Eye Care Practitioner. In such cases, your glasses may need an additional adjustment in order to fit your vision or wearing conditions.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD I GET MY EYES EXAMINED?

EYE EXAMS ARE KEY

Going for regular eye exams will not only tell you if you need new spectacles or a prescription, but also helps to keep your health in check. Your Eye Care Practitioner could catch early signs of certain eye conditions before the symptoms make themselves visible.

REGULAR EXAMS

Eye Care Practitioners recommend that most people have their eyes checked every year, depending on your age, risk factors and if you currently wear corrective lenses. It is especially important that senior people have annual check-ups in order to help avoid developing certain eye diseases.

MORE FREQUENT EXAMS

If you have a family history of any eye disease, diabetes or high blood pressure, you should have your eyes checked more frequently. The same applies if you have a visually demanding occupation, previous eye injuries or have had eye surgery.

TAKING CARE OF YOUR GLASSES

WEARING

Handling your glasses with both hands helps to maintain its original form, as handling with one hand may lead to damage or deformity of the lenses and frames. Place your glasses with the lens front surface facing upwards and not downwards to avoid scratching the lenses.

CLEANING

Keep the lens surface free from particles by rinsing it in lukewarm water. Rinse off the cleaning solution immediately after applying, to help maintain the integrity of the frame and lens coating. Use a microfiber lens cloth and wipe your lens from edge to edge.

STORING

Wipe wet glasses to avoid watermarks or stains. Avoid leaving under direct sunlight as lenses may condense light and burn the area where the glasses are placed. To store, wrap your glasses using a lens cloth and place in a case away from high temperature, humidity, exposure to chemicals, cosmetics, or hair products as it may deteriorate, discolor or weaken the lenses and frame.

TIPS FOR PROGRESSIVE LENS WEARERS

While progressive lenses may take a while to get accustomed to, the following tips will help make the transition smooth and easy.

DISTANCE AREA

When looking at far objects, always look through the upper part of your lenses and move your eyes and head towards the direction of the object. When taking the stairs, look through the upper part of your lenses by lowering your chin towards your chest. Look down at each step before you take it and use the handrail, especially in the beginning of the adaptation period.

INTERMEDIATE AREA

When focusing on objects in the intermediate distance, lower or raise your chin slightly to find your sharpest focal point. If you work in your office, you will find the intermediate area most useful when you look at your computer screen or other objects on your desk.

NEAR AREA

For comfortable reading or viewing of objects at close distance, hold the reading material between 33-40 centimeters below eye level and look through the lower part of your lenses where you will find the sharpest focal point.

PERIPHERAL AREA

While looking at something on the side, you may need to tilt your head in that direction. In order to avoid the swim and sway effect and dizziness, do not turn your head too fast.
