HOW TO READ YOUR PRESCRIPTION

You can most likely tell if you are nearsighted or farsighted, or perhaps that you have astigmatism. But all those numbers and abbreviated terms on your prescription can create some confusion.

Sphere (SPH)

This tells you about the level of the lens power, measured in diopters (D). If the number has a minus sign (–), you are nearsighted, and if the number has a plus sign (+) or no sign, you are farsighted.

Cylinder (CYL)

This indicates the amount of lens power for correcting astigmatism. If there is no number, you most likely do not have astigmatism.

Axis

The axis number specifies in which direction cylindrical power should be positioned to correct astigmatism. This number indicates orientation, not strength.

ADD

To correct presbyopia, additional power is applied to the bottom part of multifocal lenses. The number specifies how much power should be added.

PRISM

Rarely, eye alignment problems need to be compensated for. The prism diopter is a measure of the prismatic power needed for this.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Your optician may also write specific recommendations on your prescription, such as anti-reflective coating, photochromic lenses or progressive lenses. These are options for helping you get the most comfortable vision correction possible.

Which is the best lens for me?

It is not only about the eye examination and prescription. Finding the very best lens for you is also a matter of taking your appearance, personal taste, and lifestyle into consideration. The more you play a part in choosing your prescription lenses, the better the result.

Aspheric lenses

Aspherics provide a slimmer, more attractive profile and sharper peripheral vision than conventional spectacle lenses.

High Index plastic lenses

They are thinner and lighter than conventional lenses and provide better built-in protection against UV rays. It's the choice if you want slimmer lenses to get you frames look nicer.

Wavefront technology lenses

Lenses that are produced based on very precise measurements of the way light travels through your eye, which helps sharpen visual clarity.

PHOTOCHROMIC LENSES

Clear light sensitive lenses that provide 100% UV protection and automatically darken in sunlight. Beside that photochromic lenses are mainly the best variable light protection during the whole day in any surrounding.

POLARISED LENSES

Polarised lenses diminish glare from flat, reflective surfaces and also reduce eye fatigue. It is a perfect choice in situations where sunlight reflections in water or glass may disturb you.

ANTI-REFLECTIVE COATING

This is a popular add-on for lenses. This coating reduces distracting reflections and makes your eyes clearly visible. It also reduces glare and allows more light into your eyes for better vision at night.

The difference between traditional and digital lens surfacing

In traditional surfacing, a prescription is polished into the lens using a tool that is tailored to a specific prescription. Digital surfacing allows for advanced customized areas within the lens, allowing for individual tailoring of each lens.

Although traditional surfacing is usual for most prescriptions, a digital lab can also use semi-finished single vision lenses to make progressive lenses, which means there are more options for lens colors and sizes when it comes to customization. There are cases when digital surfacing can create stronger prescriptions than traditional surfacing can in highly curved wrap-around frames.
