How do photochromic lenses work?

Photochromic lenses adjust to surrounding light – the lighter the surroundings, the darker the lenses – turning your glasses into sunglasses.

Even though it may seem like magic, it is only physics. Molecules sensitive to UV rays are embedded in the lens, and when exposed to increased UV light, these molecules change characteristics and darken. The process is reversible, so when light decreases the molecules go back to a normal state again.

How are prescription glasses made?

Prescription

The first step when making prescription glasses is determining the strength of the correction or the prescription, which is done by your optician. When the prescription is ready, your numerical lens values are sent off to the laboratory. 

Grinding

In the laboratory, the prescription lenses start off as lens blanks. The blank is ground to the required lens curve by use of highly sophisticated equipment. This is a very delicate process that requires painstaking precision.

Coating and fitting to frame

After surface treatment, e.g., anti-reflective coating, UV protection and tinting, the lenses are edged and fitted to your chosen frame. 

Meticulous quality control

The glasses are scrutinized for any imperfections, and the prescriptive strength is also double checked. When passed, your new eyeglasses are cleaned, neatly packaged and delivered to your optician.
